5RB 856 is located west of 5RB 855 on the top of a ridge. The cultural
materials were found in two anthills and in northward draining arroyos,
indicating that there is a good possibility that subsurface remains are present.
Because the site would be directly affected by the use of the two-track road,
which bisects it, it was recommended that the use of this road and the
construction of the access road to 21012-2 be monitored. This was done. No
cultural debris were observed, in these areas which were disturbed or peripheral
to the site. It was learned that the soil depth on the ridge ranged from 0 to
50 cm. Because of this it is recommended that if any future impacts to the site
are planned, it be tested to determine the nature and significance of the
subsurface deposits. Based on the surface evidence, this site has no Heritage
Value .
5 RB 857 ie a small lithic scatter located on the same ridge as 5RB 855 and 5RB
856. All of the flakes recovered were found on the top of the ridge or in small
washes on the north aide of the ridge. This site has almost no potential for
yielding subsurface materials, since the soil depth here is leas than 5 cm. 5RB
857 will not be affected by the activities of the Western Fuels Association.
Should future plane directly affect this site, it is recommended that no further
work be done. This site is not eligible for the NRHP and has no Heritage Value.
5RB 860 is a small lithic scatter located on the main access road to 21 core
holes. This site, which contained two retouched tools and several flakes, was
U located largely within the tracks of the two track road. Based on the
examination of the lithic materials, the size and shape of the flakes, and the
types of tools found, this site is unlike any of the sites found within the
study area. This could indicate that this site contains materials used by a
different group of people, used at a different time of year, or at a different
time during the historic or prehistoric period. It is not known which, if any,
of the above explanations explain the differences between this site and the
other cultural areas found within the study area. Because much of the site is
probably buried beneath the sand dunes on the western aide of the road and the
thin soil on the eastern side of the road, it is not known whether this site is
eligible to the National Register of Historic Places. It is known that the site
may produce intact subsurface materials. The site has no Heritage Value.
Because of the possibility of subsurface materials in the road it waa
recommended that 5RB 860 not be graded or used by a vehicle with tracks unless
it was monitored by a professional archaeologist. The bulldozer xas trucked
into the area for the dirt work on the 21 core hole locations. The principal
investigator and Joseph J. Lischka monitored the exit of the bulldozer from the
area. No subsurface artifacts or features were uncovered.
Site 5RB 906 ie located in and around the west side of the Staley Road Sheep
Corrals. The planned Western Fuels coal exploration will not affect this site
provided that the road which transacts this site is not used for access to core
hole 310134-2 reset. It is recommended that this road not be used by Western
Fuels personnel. The site, which appears to have subsurface cultural deposits,
based on the presence of cultural materials in anthills, will continue to be
O disturbed by the use of the sheep corrals. It is recommended that the site be
tested to determine xhether subsurface remains are present and if so, whether
10-80 9
