• they were collected ,pressed and submitted to Dr. William A. Weber of the University of Colorado
Herbarium for verification. It should be noted that certain very similar plants were not differentiated
from each other during quantitative sampling because diagnostic parts were not present or visible (eg.
below-ground parts). These included Eriogonum subal~inum-E. umbellatum. Melica spectabilis-M.
Ibu bosa, and Geranium richardsonii- G. viscosissimum.
RESULTS
Vegetation Mapping
Vegetation of the Expansion Area was mapped from false color infrared aerial photos at a scale of
1:24,000 available from the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (Exhibit 10-1). The identification
numbers of the photos used were Project CO-81-HI, Aoll 2, Flightline 15, Frames 11 to 14. In addition,
black and white stereo aerial coverage at a scale of 1:13,400, flown in July 1989 for Peabody, was
used in the mapping. All mapping was ground-iruthed during field visitation in late spring and also
during the mid-summer period of quantitative sampling.
•
Vegetation Tvoes
Within the Peabody Seneca II-W Mine Expansion Area, five vegetation types were identified and
sampled, Aspen Woodland, Mixed Brush, Sagebrush, Western Wheatgrass/ Alkali Sagebrush, and Mesic
Drainage. In addition, a Steep Mixed Brush type was mapped and qualitatively described. Il should be
noted that these types are sometimes refered to by different names in other areas within the region.
Specifically, the type refered to as Mixed Brush here is often known as Mountain Brush, and Sagebrush
as it occurs in the Seneca II-W area can be refered to as Sagebrush/Snowberry,
Cover data from quantitative sampling of the above types as they occur in the Expansion Area are
presented in Tables 1 through 5, while data from sampling of Aspen Woodland, Western Wheatgrass/
Alkali Sagebrush, Mixed Brush, and Sagebrush in the Permit Area are presented in Tables 6 through 9.
Data on herbaceous biomass production within the Expansion Area vegetation types are presented in
Tables 10 through 14. Shrub density data are found in Tables 1 S through 19. These data are
summarized in Table 24. Relative vegetation cover data are summarized in Table 25.

5
