• enviro~ental balances, She discussion which follows identifies the <br />anticipated impacts of the proposed mining operation on fish and <br />wildlife resources and related enviro~ental values, ezplains how <br />disturbances and impacts have been and will continue to be avoided <br />or minisized, and states how enhancement of such resources will be <br />achieved, where practicable. <br />Disturbance of Soils <br />Stripping, stockpiling, sad redistributing topsoil materials <br />directly impacts animals with subterranean habitat requirements. <br />However, this impact is temporary since ground-burrowing mammals <br />quickly move back into newly-reclaimed areas. Gophers and marmots <br />• enter recently reclaimed azeas in eztremely large numbers and <br />provide more prey per unit area than undisturbed tracts. <br />Ground nesting avifauna aze also directly impacted by soil <br />disturbances. The ability and tendency of these species to utilize <br />reclamation is not well-documented. <br />Disturbance of the soil system in the proposed permit area has <br />been minimized by strategically Locating roads and surface support <br />facilities. The only additional soil disturbance planned in this <br />application will occur on the 5.3 acre topsoil removal tract between <br />County &oad 179 and the Middle Creek Mine portal area. Suitable <br />• plant growth media salvaged from this area will be directly hauled <br /> <br />2.05 - 116 <br />
