_ .
t
_. Port f
' .. :. .. ..: Page No, 7
' . ~ _ ~ ~ - ~ - Permit Na: Cl~-t1013G-1%
C. DEFINITIONS OF TERMS
1. "Composite" sample is a minimum.of four (4) grab samples collected at equally spaced..nvo (2} hour intervals and proportioned
according to flow.. '
•2. "Continuous".measurement,.is a measurement obtained from an automatic recording device: which continually provides
measurements.
3. "Daily Maximum limitation" means the -itnitation for this parameter shalt be applied as an instantaneous maximum (or, for pf i
or DO. instantaneous minimmn) value. The instantaneous value is defined as the analytical result of any individual sample.
D~iRs shall include the maximum (and/or minimum} of a!1 instantaneous values within the calendar month. Any instantaneous
value beyond the noted daily maximum (imitation for the indicated parameter shalt be considered a violation of this permit.
4. "Dissoh•ed (D} metals fraction" is defined in the Baci St,nd,~da end M thodntngi ~ fore S~nrf~LV,, rs, 1002-31, as that portion
of a water and suspended sediment sample which passed through a 0.40 or 0.45 um (micron) membrane filter. Dztemtinations
of"'dtssolved" constituents are made using the filtrate. This may include some very small (colloidap suspended particles, «nich
passed through the membrane filter as will as the amount of substance present in we,chemical solution.
5. "Ora6" sample, is a singe "dip and take". sample io bz representative of the pamntetcr beins rnoniwretl.
b. "-n-situ" measurement is defined.as asingle reading, observation or measurcmem taken in the field at the point of discharge.
7. "Ltstantaneous" tneasuremcnt is a single reading, observation, or measurement perfomtcd on site using existing rnoni« xim,
facilities.
K. "Potrntiapy dissolved (PD) metals fraction" isdefined in the $asjc sr~nriards and 4trrhndningi~"c for 4tirf•tre Water at 5 CCR
,1002-31, as that portion of a constituent measured from the Gltraie of a water and suspended sediment sample that was first
treated with nitric acid to a pI I pf 2 or less and let stand for R to 9C-hours prior [n sample filtration using a 0.40 or 0.4>-t \1
(micron) membrane fitter. Note the "potentially dissoh•zd" method cannot be used where nitric acid will interfere with the
analytical procedure used for the constituent measured.
9. "Quarterly measurement freyueucy'"_ means samples may be collected at anytime during the calendar quarter if •u continual
discharge occurs. If the dixharge is intemtittcnt, then samples shall be collected during the period that discharge occurs.
10. "Recorder" requires the coutinurnts operation of a chart and/or` totalizer (or drinking tvatrr rotor meters or pump hour meters
where previously approved.) -
I I "Seven (7) Jay average" means, with the exception of fecal coliform bacteria, the anttunetic mean of all samples collected in a
seven (7) consecutive day period. For fecal colifonn bacteria, it is the geometric memi of all samples taken in •r seven (7)
consecutive day period. Such seven (7) day averages.shall be calculated fur all calendar weeks, which are defined as beginning
till Sunday and ending on Saturday. Ifthe calendar week ogerlaps two months (i.e. the Sunday is in one month and the Saturday
in the following monht), the seven (7) day average calculated for that calendar week shall be associated with the month that
contains the Saturday. Samples Wray not be used for more than one (1) reporting period. (Not applicable to fecal colifotnt
determinations.)
12. "Thirty (30} day average" means, except for fecal colifornt bacteria, the arithmetic mean of all samples collected during a thirty
(30)-consecutiveday period. For fecal colifomt bacteria, it is the geometric mean of all samples collected in a thirty (30) day
period. The petTrtittee shall report the appropriate mean of all self-monitoring sample data collected during the calendar month
on the Discharge Moniwrina Reports. Samples shall not be used fur more than one (1) reporting period.
13. "Total Metals" means the concentration of metals detemtined on an unfiltered sample following vigorous digestion (Section
4.1.3), or the sum of the concentrations of metals in both the dissolved and suspended fractions, as described in ":t&runu! nr
;Llethnds for CJrernical Annlvsis oJ' IVarer rnrd Ii4retec." L.S. Em ironntental Protection Agency, Alarch 1979, or its equivalent.
14. "Total Recoverable Metals" means that portion of a water and suspended sediment sample measured by the total recoverable
anaytical procedure described in "a/etlrodc jor Chemical arurlcris of Ifarer and lt~~.ctes. " U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency, .March 1979 or its equivalent.
