•
REVIEW QUESTION
2.05.4
(2)(c) 1. Inspection of the soil horizon description indicates that
there is nearly as much variability in the color of A horizons as between A
and B horizons within most profiles. Color or hue differentiation by the
equipment operator is not an adequate method for determining stripping
depth in itself.
2. How were the topsoil volumes derived for Table 3. Based on
the information presented in Exhibit T, these volume estimates could vary
by a factor of 5 in some cases. Specificity of these data is a critical
issue with respect to development of topsoil balance sheets. Please submit
more specific information.
RESPONSE
I. The soil horizon descriptions indicate that there is some
variation within the A horizon but only to the "trained eye"
using Munsell soil color charts. There is a clear differ-
entiation between the A and B horizon in the active mining
zone. The Routt soil serfies composes most of the mining

zone and has an easily distinguishable A and B horizon, even
to the "untrained" eye. -= _
In addition to the color differentiation, cut stakes will be
added by the environmental engineer prior to topsoil removal
to aid operators in removing the proper depth of topsoil.
