199
'• Site: SMF340 (Figs 5, 57).
site Type: Open lithic.
Location: SWINE;, Sec. 3, TSn, R92w; UTM Zone 13, E270,500m., N4,477,400m.;
adjacent to Tract 8.
Description; 5MF340 is an open lithic site located on the northwest end of
the first terrace above the Yampa River in Round Bottom. The site is exposed
in all directions, with only a slight rise to the second terrace providing
minimal protection to the south and east. The elevation is 6160 ft. (1,878 m.).
Local vegetation includes sagebrush, grasses, larkspur, and cactus. The near-
est water source is the Yampa River 175 m. to the west.
The site consists of a thin scatter of flakes and artifactual materials
scattered over the terrace in an area 69 by 88 m. The flake density was higher
~• in the northwest portion of the site area, near the terrace edge. From there,
the density dropped markedly.
SMF340 is relatively undisturbed, but might have been picked over by local
collectors. The site is in close proximity to 5MF338 and 5MF339. A jeep trail
runs past the site to the south at a distance of 20 to 30 m. from the limit of
lithic debris.
Diagnostic Arcifacts: Chopper, Type [A; unifacial scraper, Type IIA; and a
biface, Type !A.
evaluation: 5MF340 has no potential for yielding information important to pre-
- history and should not be nominated to the NRHP. However, the site may have
scientific values and should be afforded protection under other antiquities
statutes if directly endangered by future developments.
t
