198
~•
Site: 5MF339 (Figs 5, 57).
site Type: Open lithic.
Location: SW ;NE ;, Sec. 3, TSn, R92w; UTM Zone 13, E210,600m., N4,477,180m.
Description: 5MF339 is an open lithic site, situated on an interfluvial
ridge on the western edge of the second terrace above the Yampa River in
Round Bottom. The elevation at the site is 6160 ft. (1,878 m.).' The site
faces to the southwest, but is exposed in all directions. Local vegetation
includes sagebrush, grasses, and cactus. The nearest water is the Yampa
River 300 m. to the northwest.
The site consists of a thin scatter of flakes and tools. No obvious
/•
concentrations or permanent features were observed. The tools collected
were restricted to ground stone and heavy tools since chipped stone tools
were not evident.
5MF339 is subject to erosion on the southern side of the site where
a seasonal drainage passes nearby, and a modern fenceline bisects the site.
Diagnostic artifacts: Chopper, Type IA; hammers tones, Type IA, IB; and a
mano, Type IIA.
evaluation: 5MF339 lacks potential to yield information important to pre-
history and should not be nominated to the NRHP. However, the site may have
scientific value and should be protected from destruction until it has been
salvaged.
