_~,
Pond F
Originally, this pond (Photograph No. 1) was designed to spill from its emergency
spillway directly into the Canal with a minor amount going into a cut in the CMP for
Deer Trail Ditch (Ditch). The controlled discharge was also designed to go into the
Ditch. However, after receiving complaints and concerns from Reclamation and its
managing entity as well as from the Division of Minerals and Geology (DMG) for the
State of Colorado, Bowie has redesigned the pond so that spills from the emergency
spillway will be directed into a flume, which is on an old spur rail road bridge
(Photograph Nos. 9-12), that crosses the Canal and dumps the discharge downstream and
outside of the Canal easement corridor. Bowie has recently signed a Letter of Consent
with Reclamation and FMCRC authorizing the Canal crossing. The FMCRC plans to
sign the letter at its next boazd meeting scheduled for March 10. Design data for the
flume and the approaches to and from the flume on the Canal easement will be provided,
reviewed and approved prior to finalization of this Letter of Consent.
Bowie has recently installed a 3" - 397 gallons per minute capacity pump in Pond F
(Photograph Nos. 3 & 4) and that is intended to be used to pump water from the pond to a
48-inch diameter culvert under the old State Highway 133 to an undershot under the
Canal (Photograph Nos. 4 - 8). Concern was expressed by attendees as to the pump's
capability -whether or not it's big enough to do an adequate job of dewatering the pond
in a reasonable length of time.
Mine waste pile #2 is located above Pond F (Photograph No. 2). It is projected to have a
10-year life and has grown considerably over the past few months. Water from the wash
that the waste pile plugs is diverted around both sides of the pile to end up in Pond F
(Photograph Nos. 1 & 2). Questions concerning the pile's stability were expressed.
Bowie plans to submit new stability reports to the DMG in the near future.
Ponds C & D
The waste water from these ponds and haul road runoff as well as flows for a wash is
proposed to be channeled to bypass the Deer Trail Ditch and go over the Canal through
an existing 8-inch diameter irrigation pipeline (Photograph Nos. 13 - 19). A request by
the Bowie engineering consultant, dated March 10, 2005, indicates that Bowie would like
to replace the existing pipe with two 24-inch diameter steel pipes to convey all discharges
from these two ponds, plus the wash the ponds dischazge into, over the Canal. Bowie
will coordinate the request with Reclamation so a Letter of Consent can be executed prior
to construction.
Pond B
The discharges from the emergency spillway and controlled discharges from this pond go
into the Ditch and then into an 18-inch pipeline that crosses the Canal (Photograph Nos.
21 - 24, 28). The Ditch has been cleaned and has had a 6-inch flume installed since the
last site visit, which will improve flows in the Ditch (Photograph Nos. 25-27). The Ditch
2
