Section 779.12 (b) Continued.
• archaeological features within the proposed mine plan and adjacent areas.
The description shall be based on all available information, including,
but not limited to, data of State and local archeolcgical, historical,
and cultural preservation agencies.
There are no known cultural or historic resources listed or eligible
for listing on the National Register of Historic Places within the
mine plan or adjacent areas. This conclusion is based upon numerous
surveys of the mine plan and adjacent areas more particularly des-
cribed below. The term "historic site" or "archaeologic site", as
used in this application, does not indicate a cultural or historic
resource listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register
of Historic Places. Rather, the terms refer to areas which were
studied by Energy Fuels or appropriate governmental agencies and
which, unless otherwise indicated, did not rise to the level of
significance required to be eligible for listing in the National
• Register.
Di~,ring the summer of 1975, Dr. Alan Olson of Denver University,
spent five man-days conducting, a reconnaissance survey of the Energy
Mine No. 1 area. Dr. Olson's report dated September 18, 1975
states:
". that the area is initially unsuitable for permanent
occupation. However, therms is the potential for seasonal
utilization prior to European settlement of the region. Th:.s
activity, such as hunting or gathering undoubtedly occured,
but this utilization does not produce definite concentrations
of artifacts except possibly at base camps. None of these
were located. The vegetative cover inhibited 100% coverage of
the parcels, but all feasible locations for occupation were
intensively surveyed for a total of five man-days."
The report closes by stating: "The areas surveyed appear to be
devoid of any archaeological material."
• In 1978, the Bureau of Land Management (Craig, Colorado District)
conducted an environmental assessment of Energy Fuels proposed
779-3
