The climate of the general area is arid to semiarid and continental.
Mean monthly values of temperature and precipitation are available at
Rangely, Colorado, located about 10 miles southwest of the lease area.
Conditions are fairly similar to these in the lease area.
Mean monthly temperature in the Rangely area range from the low teens
to the low 70's. Because temperatures in the region tend to be inversely
related to elevation (U.S. Bureau of Land Management,1978), mean monthly
temperatures are probably somewhat lower in the mine area than in
Rangely.
Average annualprecipitation, including approximately 40 inches of snow,
• is just under nine inches in Rangely. Thirty to forty percent of the
annual precipitation falls during the winter as snow with the remainder
coming through the summer and Eall rain, generally from thunderstorms
(see Section II.E - Climatology).
3. RED WASH
The Red Wash drainage is the larger of the two tributaries of White
River associated with the mine permit area. Only the refuse disposal
site located northeast of the portal site, will be associated with the
drainage.
a. Geology
The drainage basin lies within the Red Wash syncline, an asymmetrical
structure on the northeast flank of the Rangely anticline. The
• axis of the syncline trends northwesterly and lies northeast of
4/81 II.D-4
