• the northern boundary of the lease area. Beds strike from north-
west to southeast, with dips in the Red Wash Basin varying from
an angle of about 7 degrees (12 percent) in the lower reaches, to
flat at the synclinal axis, to as much as 70 degrees (275 percent)
near the confluence of the upper Red Wash tributaries (see Section
II,B - Geology).
Alluvial deposits in Red Wash shown in Map 102 consist of terraces,
flood plains, and active ephermal channels. The alluvium in tribu-
tary drainages is confined to the channel areas. Channel incision
in the alluvium ranges from 5 to 30 feet. Incision occurs within
the main channel and at the confluences of the main channel and
• tributaries.
Rocks exposed in the drainage basin are generally within the 2500
to 3000-foot thick Mesaverde Group of Upper Cretaceous age. Some
tertiary Wasatch Formation outcrops were mapped along the synclinal
axis by Barnum and Garrigues (1980).
The stratigraphy and a brief description of the exposed strata is
presented in Figure II.D-1. If more detail is desired, refer to
section II.B - Geology of this permit.
Although small, local displacement may exist in the mine permit
area, no major faulting has been noted (see Section II.B - Geology).
• As a result, increases in porosity due to fracturing are probably
minimal.
4/81
II.D-5
