Page 2
Topsoiling:
Topsoil has been stockpiled in an area away from the
natural drainage. If erosion problems are detected, a
• temporary vegetation cover will be employed. Anticipated
topsoil depth immediately following reclamation activities
is less than six inches.
Waste material at this time is high in nitrogen, because
of the chemical composition of the blasting materials used.
Since conditions cannot be projected for the time when recla-
mation will begin, a specific fertilizer mixture will be
decided upon in the future following soil tests, experimenta-
tion, etc.
Reve~etation;
Revegetation is planned Yor all affected lands except
those roads that were pre-existing. (This is a stipulation in
the lease agreement.) At present, the following seeding mixture
recommended by the surface owners (Bureau of Land Management)
is proposed:
" ~ Rate of application
Species (Broadcast)
Crested wheatgrass 4 pounds/acre
. Western wheatgrass 4 pounds/acre
Four-wing saltbush 3 pounds/acre
Indian ricegrass 2 pounds/acre
Yellow sweetclover 3 pounds/acre
TOTAL BROADCAST RATE 16 pounds/acre
The seedbed will be prepared by harrowing and seed will
be broadcast or hand sown at the rate specified above.
All revegetation details (mixtures, fertilization, methods,
mulching, etc.) are subject to change due to experimentation and
technological advances. All reclamation will be of the dryland
type without benefit of irrigation.
The proposed seed mixture is readily available at several
commercial seed dealers in the Grand Junction and Montrose area.
Preferred time of planting is late summer to early fall.
REHABILITATION EFFECT OF RECLAMATION
Although much oY the surrounding vegetation consists of
pinyon pine and juniper, the affected land will be planted
largely in grass with some desert shrubs by recommendation of
the surface owners, the Bureau of Land Management. This type
of revegetation will be of greater benefit to the rangeland
and. wildlife habitat uses of the land, and will provide better
and more immediate soil stabilization.
