-I6-
The proposed configuration of the lake allows both control and limits
evaporation in comparison to a shallower lake which would require excavation
and a larger surface area. As noted in the response to items raised by Bob
Liddle, the final design configuration of the lake and drainages, made as
mining progresses, will enable the analyses necessary to select final designs.
These analyses will indicate the actual slopes appropriate for the lake area.
Adequate surety to cover these analyses is included in Exhibit L.
Homestake, in consultation with representatives of the State Division of
Wildlife and Homestake's consultant, believes the South Pit lake will
enhance wildlife use of the area while helping to control peak flows.
The design of the pond appears essentially the same as that approved by
the Division and the Board pursuant to Rule 6.if.
Item: Use of additional amendments along haul road from millsite to Tie Camp.
~Re~s on~se~: Homestake has determined that the conditions affecting reclamation
at the haul road site do not differ from conditions of the adjacent cut and fill
areas with the exception that the haul road has been compacted. The same earth
materials are involved. Therefore, once the compacted surface is ripped, it
will be seeded, fertilized, and mulched as described on page 14 of the amendment,
as will other cut and fill surfaces.
Item: Reclamation revegetation steps to be used at limestone quarry.
Response: To summarize, from the Amendment, the steps to be conducted at the
quarry are:
1. The area will be graded to final topography.
2. Drainage across the regraded areas will be established.
3. Slopes will be retained in roughened condition.
4. Area will be hydroseeded, fertilized, and hydromulched.
It should be stressed that this area is basically road cut. Essentiaily
the area can be revegetated in the same manner as surrounding road cuts.
Item: Plans to control rill erosions where the Crown Ditch will be breached.
Res onse: Homestake plans to breach the Crown Ditch at intersections With
naturally-occurring drainages to remove maintenance requirements. The
reduction in flow along the dike, especially along the steeper portions of
the ditch, would reduce the tendency for rill erosion. As noted in a previous
response to Mr. Bob LiddTe's observations regarding partial breaching of the
Crown Ditch and armoring of the drainages, Homestake will evaluate the options
available for breaching and the accompanying requirements for armoring as site-
specific designs are developed. Such designs will necessitate an enhanced
perspective of the final topography which can only be gained as mining
progresses. Homestake has included adequate surety in Exhibit L to
cover this "Engineering Investigations and Design."
