A surface water quality monitoring program was initiated during mining and
• is being maintained during the bonding period at five surface water stations.
Two stations are located on the Yampa River, above and below the disturbed area
(these stations were discontinued in 1985, as approved by CMLRD). Three other
sites were located to characterize surface water runoff quality from the mine
disturbed areas. The first site is located at the outfall from an impoundment
discharging to the Yampa River (near crusher), and the second and third sites
monitor water discharging water from sedimentation ponds located on the mine
area. The two sampling sites on the backfilled mine area are currently being
maintained in accordance with the criteria outlined in Section 2.05.6, as
approved by CMLRD Technical Revision 03 and 04 (Hydrology Monitoring). The
existing monitoring sites are located on Map 7.
In addition to monitoring surface water quality from ephemeral drainages,
• Sun Coal Company will obtain samples from springs that could develop on the
backfilled mine area when the discharge is in excess of three gallons per
minute. If springs are identified, as previously discussed, water discharge
will be estimated and samples will be taken and analyzed for conductivity and
pH. See Section 2.05.6 for monitoring requirements.
Since ground water observation wells have not been completed in the back-
filled mine area and wells in the Yampa River have been temporarily abandoned,
ground water monitoring will not be conducted during the ten-year bonding
period.
Surface water samples have been and will be taken in accordance with 40 CFR
136, using approved sampling protocols. Samples will be tagged and shipped to
Bookcliffs for laboratory analysis. Prior to obtaining samples, monthly flow
measurements will be made and samples will be shipped to the lab to quantify
- 104 - (Rev. 5/86)
