EC~~~'~
Surface Water
• The only perennial watercourse
is the Yampa River. Surface water
gaging station for the period prior
flows were not diverted or directly
DEC U5 1986
MINE.. ~,.._
gECLAMATION OIVI3~ON
in the vicinity of Sun Coal Company's area
gaging records were obtained from the USGS
to and during mining activities. Since
affected by Sun Coal Company, data suggest
mining and reclamation activities have not had an effect on surface water flows
in the Yampa River (see Table 2.04.7-5).
Coal View Gulch, Stone House Gulch, and a small tributary to Grassy Creek
are ephemeral streams draining the reclaimed backfilled area. About 90 percent
of the Meadows No. 1 permit area drains westward toward the headwaters of Grassy
Creek, with little runoff entering either Coal View Gulch or Stone House Gulch.
Post-mine surface drainage characteristics from the reclaimed surface have been
modified during the reclamation process and are discussed in detail in Section
2.05.4. Drainage modification as a result of road construction is considered
• minor since the road is located on the headwaters of the small drainages drain-
ing the permit area. Drainage, on May 8, between water bars 38-84 drains into
Stone House Gulch/Yampa River, whereas the drainage between water bars i1-37
drain directly into the Coal View drainage.
Water Quality
Water quality monitoring has been performed at six sites in and adjacent to
the permit area. Surface water monitoring sites were located at points 200 feet
above and 1,000 feet below the bridge (Table 2.04.7-6) to the mining facility on
the Yampa River and at four sediment-control ponds: Table 2.04.7-7 (Coal View
Gulch), Table 2.04.7-8 (lower Yampa sedimentation pond--abandoned), Table
2.04.7-9 (pond by crusher--replaced lower Yampa sedimentation pond), and Table
2.04.7-10 (Pond fll, south end of reclaimed area). Samples from the third sedi-
• ment control pond (explosive storage area) have been obtained, and all data will
be reported in Sun's annual monitoring reports.
- 95 - (Rev. 5/86)
