4-120 <br />• 4.8.12.4 Juniper Woodland Reference Area <br />The Juniper Woodland reference area is located within the <br />permit area boundary on a steep, northwest-facing slope which <br />has a Torriorthent rock outcrop complex. The reference is <br />square in shape and incorporates approximately seven acres. <br />See Figure 4.8-2. <br />Total percent cover is highly comparable in the reference <br />(48.7 percent cover) and affected (43.3 percent cover) areas. <br />Utah juniper is the dominant species in both reference and <br />affected areas. Salina wildrye is the dominant understory <br />species in both areas. See Tables 4.8-13 and 4.8-27. <br />• Production is nearly identical in the reference and affected <br />areas, averaging 52.0 g/m2 or 463 pounds per acre compared to <br />458 pounds per acre in the affected area. See Tables 4.8-14 and <br />4.6-28. <br />Tree density is somewhat lower in the reference area (81 trees <br />per acre) than in the affected area (112 trees per acre). Total <br />shrub density is also lower in the reference area (672 shrubs <br />per acre) compared to the affected area (1,602 shrubs per acre). <br />See Tables 4.8-15 and 4.8-29 tree data and Tables 4.8-16 and <br />4.8-30 for shrub data. <br />Species richness is lower in the reference area (index = 7.65) <br />primarily because of the low number of forbs.
