CDPS EXCEEDANCE REPORT
Mine Site: COLOWYO MINE
Outfall No.: 001 A
Pertnit No.: CO-00045161
Sample Date: 08/10/2004
Sample Taken by: Summer Intern -Scott Benson Laboratory Sample ID: L47159-01
Exceedences: Total Suspended Solids - 230 me/L, Report Prepared by: Kurtis Blunt
Explanation:
Precipitation records indicate that there was a storm event on August 5 and no storms from
August 6 to August 10. The sample was taken on August 10. Historical information from similar
events followed by several days of no precipitation indicate there has not been any water quality
exceedences. Therefore, this exceedance does not make sense when compared to other similaz
conditions.
A newly trained individual took the samples in question. It is suspected that the individual
cleaned the perforated riser (weep holes) immediately prior to taking the samples. This activity
would assuredly stir up material in front of the weep holes and be incorporated into the sample,
causing the abnormal results. Subsequent sampling at Outfall OOIA reflected historical levels of
Total Suspended Solids. We believe that the individual inadvertently introduced sediment into
the stream flow that wntaminated the samples in question, causing elevated levels of Total
Suspended Solids and Settleable Solids.
Identify Support Info:
Colowyo Mine -Ambient Air Network: 3'rd Qtr. Precipitation & Temperature Data
Proposed Action:
Summer Interns will no longer collect compliance samples without experienced Colowyo
employees in attendance. New or temporary employees will wmplete a formalized training
program before they are allowed to collect compliance samples.
Approval by Sr. Env.
