CDPS EXCEEDANCE REPORT
Mine Site: COLOWYO MINE Permit No.: CO-00045161
Outfall No.: 007A Sample Date: 07/22/2004
Sample Taken by: Summer Intern -Scott Benson Laboratory Sample ID: L46870-01
Exceedences: Total Suspended Solids - 114 mg/L: Settleable Solids - 3 mL/L/h
Report Prepared by: Kurtis Blunt
Explanation:
Precipitation records indicate that there were storm events from July 14 to July 17 and no
storms from July 18 to July 21. The sample was taken on July 22. Historical information from
similar events followed by several days of no precipitation indicate there has not been any water
quality exceedences. Therefore, these exceedences do not make sense when compared to other
similar conditions.
A newly trained individual took the samples in question. It is suspected that the individual
cleaned the perforated riser (weep holes) immediately prior to taking the samples. This activity
would assuredly stir up material in front of the weep holes and be incorporated into the sample,
causing the abnormal results. Due to the short duration of the discharge at Outfall 007A,
supplemental samples were unable to be taken that would support our contention. We believe
that the individual inadvertently introduced sediment into the stream flow that contaminated the
samples in question, causing elevated levels of Total Suspended Solids and Settleable Solids.
Identify Support Info:
Colowyo Mine -Ambient Air Network: 3'rd Qtr. Precipitation & Temperature Data
Proposed Action:
Summer Interns will no longer collect compliance samples without experienced Colowyo
employees in attendance. New or temporary employees will complete a formalized training
program before they are allowed to collect compliance samples.
Approval by Sr. Env.
