• Wildlife (Allen Whitaker) and II.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Bonel
Finely) agreed, during a meeting on December 19, 1979, that no
additional wildlife resource information was required for the
proposed Mine No. 3 operations.
As a result of the contacts with state and federal officials,
review of eaisting literature and intensive site-specific analysis,
the following fish and wildife resources information is presented.
FISH AND WILDLIFE HABITAT STIIDY
BEGIONAL SETTING
Fish and wildlife inhabiting the region encompassing the
• proposed permit and adjacent areas form a complex of various
mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, reptiles and inaecte. A number of
enviro~ental factors such as Boils, vegetation and climate
influence the distribution, composition, and population of the fauna
within the region. While several smaller species of animals are
closely tied to particular habitats, larger species range over the
region and may be found in different habitats depending on the
climatic conditions and the season of the year. Only two of the ten
species clasaifed as big game by the CROW are located within the
region in substantial numbers. These two species are mule deer and
elk. Critical habitats for the two principal big game species are
considered to be fawing and elk calving ground, migration routes
. and winter range. Mountain lion sad black bear are known to occur
occasionally in this region, but are not considered likely for the
permit area.
2.04-52
