• The major upland bird species in the region is the sage
grouse. In a few areas blue grouse and sharp-tailed grouse may
occur. Information on fauna having less economic value to man is
limited. However, the moat important of these species are the
rabbits, hares and rodents.
WILDLIFE HABITAT CBARACTEEISTICS
The wildlife habitats present in the proposed permit and
adjacent areas are correlated to the following vegetation types
sagebrush, meadow, mountain shrub, and aspen. Aquatic habitats are
also present in Fish, Foidel and Middle Creeks.
• Sagebrush. The sagebrush plant community is widespread on the
proposed permit and adjacent areas. Phyaiographically, sagebrush
occurs primarily between meadow (lower elevations) and mountain
shrub (higher elevations) vegetation types. Sagebrush communities
are either dominated by big sagebrush (Artemesia tridentata) or low
sagebrush (Artemesia arbuscula).
Mule deer rely on sagebrush habitat throughout the year, but
heaviest use occurs during the winter months. Sagebrush is an
important winter browse species for mule deer. The lowland areas
and south facing elopes where sagebrush occurs exhibit leas snow
cover during the winter than upland portions of the proposed permit
. area.
2.04-83
