• controlling or limiting the distribution of species, such as elevation,
slope, aspect, soils, water availability, and past management. Current
condition and trend shall be discussed for each community type or portion
thereof if significant differences exist within a type. This discussion
may take the form of an analysis of vegetation gradients in relation to
environmental gradients.
Introduction
On a regional basis, the proposed permit area is situated below
the Western Spruce - Fir Forest in the sagebrush-steppe vegetation
zone (Ruchler, 1964). Stands of scrub oak ( ercus gambellii) often
dominate the steep side elopes, forming islands of trees. Aspen
• (Populua tremuloides) may also be found on the steeper north-facing
elopes and is sometimes mired with scrub oak and other mountain
shrubs such as aerviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia) and chokecherry
(Prunus virginiana).
The mountain shrub vegetation type commonly forms large atanda
occupying many acres. However, there are only a few small isolated
atanda in the is®ediate vicinity of the proposed permit area.
Qndisturbed plant communities near the Energy Mine No. 3 are
frequently dominated by sagebrush.
Climatic conditions in the general area are typified by heavy
snowfall and cold temperatures in the winter months and moderate
• summertime temperatures with less than 20X of the average annual
precipitation occurring during the months of June, July and August.
2.04-71
