<br />1 <br />RESEARCH DESIGN <br />' Ptethodology <br />The cultural resource inventory for the Grand Mesa Coal <br />1 Company's Red Canyon Mine Plan Area was made up of t~•~o parts. <br />First, a 1000 pedestrian survey was conducted in areas proposed <br />as a refuse pile and sediment pond. Approximately 20.5 acres <br />' were covered in this manner. The second part of the survey <br />consisted of a 106 sample-oriented survey of possible subsidence <br />areas within the mine plan area. It should be noted that the mine <br />plan area includes a 300-feet (91.4 m.) buffer zone around the <br />perimeter of the permit boundary. The area within the permit <br />boundary plus the buffer zone includes approximately 680 acres. <br />' To arrive at the IOo sample (or 68 acres), the mine plan <br />area, including the buffer zone, was divided into 100 m. transects <br />running either east to west or north to south. These transects <br />' i•~ere then numbered and a table of random numbers was used to choose <br />the transects for field reconnaissance. Acreage in each transect <br />was variable: transect 3 is approximately 17.9 acres; transect 17 <br />is 21.1 acres; and transects 27 and 29 contain 14.7 acres each. <br />' The total acreage surveyed in the loo sample is 69.2 acres or just <br />over the loo required. <br />1 <br /> <br /> <br />1 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />1 <br />Since no other archaeological sites have been recorded in the <br />project area itself, it was anticipated that the 10 sample would <br />yield information concerning both the historic and prehistoric <br />utilization of the area. <br />Prehistory <br />Cultural Background <br />Hibbets, et al. (1979) note eleven major time periods that <br />directly pertain to the project area. It is possible that cultural <br />resources from any of these time periods may occur in the project <br />area.
