r

~~ •
Mr. Alberi R. Frei
-3-

14arch 22, 1983
Will both a rock mulch and a wood mulch be used?
®5 What size of wood chips are to be used? It is the staff's
experience that chips larger than 4 inches adequately acts as a
mulch without drastically affecting the carbon:nitrogen ratio of
the soil.
~6.~ Why is additional fertilizer needed only on south-faciny slopes
and not north-faciny slopes when the wood mulch is used?
What is the basis for your assertion that "...the amount of
nitroyen should be increased by about 40 pounds per acre for
every 1/2 inch of wood chips used"?
® How will the topsoil be spread onto the bean areas?
fused on the information provided under Exhibit I, the total
water holding capacity fur 12 inches of soil is 1.68 inches.
Douylas Fir and Ponderosa Pine have approximately 9U! of their
roots in the top 12 inches of soil. However, most of the water
intake for these two species occurs in the l0Y of the roots
below the '11 inches of soil. because the water holding of this
soil is only 1.68 inches, the staff feels there are severe tree
dessication proolems. Therefore, to better increase the
potential for the trees surviving, increase the soil amount to
at least 18 inches.
Whay type (eg. bare root, containerized) of trees will be
planted? ~.~~~
Will a fertilizer pellet be put in with the tree? This is an
inexpensive way to assist in the tree yrowtli. ~~~5
~, What is the proposed density to be achieved for the three
different tree species? =,ir.a..~c - ,s - a p it
po.ro. Exhibit H - lJildlife Information
Submit the Division of Wildlife's Impact Analysis Report as soon
as it becomes available.
Exhibit I - Soils Information
(~1'~l.` Upon field inspection of the site, the staff believes there are
some areas in the "kocky North-Facing Saridy Loam" where there is
salvageable topsoil. To enhance the reclamation potential of
the bench areas, salvaging as much topsoil as possible from
these areas, taking into consideration slope steepness and
rockiness criteria, is imperative.
