~:. ..
Mr. Nlbert R. Frei -2- March 22, 1983
+~` ~5~ Drainage from the mine floor, as stated in the permit
application, is from east to west. Will this water end up in
the ravine drainage on the west end of the property? If not,
where will the water leave the site?
~. What measures will be taken to control sediment flowing off of
the disturbed area?
Will Stage 1 be totally mined prior to the commencement of
mining in Stage 2?
What will the crushed gneiss be used for?
Because of the nature of rock cleavage in this area, the staff
teas some concerns regading long-term, post-mining slope
stability (particularly north-facing slopes or others where the
attitude of foliation trends the direction of slope). The
operator should provide an appropriate stability analysis to
support the planned final slope configuration and co~n~nit to
stability certification of the pit walls periodically during the
life of this operation.
i10~] Please provide methodology of blasting, proposed blasting
~ material to be used, and shock wave analyses. This information
is needed due to the close proximity of the Conoco complex south
of the affected area.
Please provide across-sectional diayra~n of the final slope
configuration (preferably ari E-W section depicting maximum
relief).
C. Exhibit E - Reclamation Plan
l~ Will the access trails on the benches be reclaimed?
On paye 19, it was noted "...no salvageable soils will be
encountered until mining is into the second stage...". However,
on afield inspection of the site, it appeared feasible to
salvage soil from the south- and west-facing slopes of Stage 1.
The Soil l;onservation Service recommends a high seeding rate of
at least SU seeds per square foot for broadcasting purposes.
This hiyh seeding rate is to better insure successful
establishment of a long-lasting vegetation stand. This rate is
based upon years of experience. On paye 19 of the permit
application, it states "The quantity of seed broadcast will be
relatively hiyh as most seed will not land in suitable
environments". However, the proposed seeding rate is only 66
live seeds per square foot on south-facing slopes and 30-35
seeds per square foot for north-facing slopes.
Since the cost for seed is minimal, please increase the
broadcasted seeding rate for north- and south-facing slopes to
at least 80 seeds per square foot.
