the impossibility of 1008 depth exactitude by manual or mechanical
• seeders.
13) P-E-12 - What are the species, general pattern and
density of trees to be planted? For north and west facing slopes, we
recommend Ponderosa Pine and Douglas Fir, for south and east facing
slopes, we recommend Pinon Pine and Juniper.
RESPONSE D13. Trees will be planted on the upper portion
of the quarry. Generally, the trees to be used will be Ponderosa
Pine as these are more capable of surviving in coarse soils. Douglas
Fir would probably not make it in these soils. Pinon Pine and
Juniper may also be used to feather into adjoining areas of similar
tree areas, particularly in Tract B.
These trees would be planted from 10 to 20 or 25 feet apart
• on the terraces.
14) The trees and shrubs will need to be watered 3 or 4
times for the first 2 years to increase the likelihood for survival.
RESPONSE D14. A standard procedure which has been successful
elsewhere is to water shrubs once during planting. Trees may need
additional water, but by planting on terraces which generally will
hold moisture better ought to remove the need for additional watering.
We have allowed for watering in the reclamation costs, but do not believe
that, especially at the Pikeview Quarry, this will be necessary. Shading
during the hot parts of the day help to produce a more favorable moisture
environment (see Page P-K-4).
15) - Please be more specific as to the experiment area in
regards to seed mixtures, tree and shrub planting and transplanting,
•
P-E-18*
