point as would cause a slide. Heavy thunderstorms can erode the surface
• areas readily until revegetated, but the function of the terraces is
to avoid this problem by controlling the loss of soil and holding the
water long enough to allow it to seep into the soil where it can be
used.
We will not say that slides and slippage are impossible. It
would be very foolish to say that about just about anyplace. But we do
believe experience has shown it is highly improbable that significant
sliding and slipping will occur.
10) What type of broadcast seeder will be used?
RESPONSE D10. Steeper slopes will have to be seeded with a
hand operated broadcaster and it is likely that small areas may
also be seeded by hand. Larger areas would be seeded with machine
• operated equipment that would be rented for a day or twc at a time.
Local commercial availability will determine brand of equipment used.
11) Grass seed should be planted as soon as the ground can
be worked in the Spring.
RESPONSE D11. This is fine for carrots, radishes, and
snowpeas, but in reclamation plantings more precision is needed. The
climatic study clearly shows that April is the time to plant to
take advantage of the Spring rains. This is stated on page P-E-10.
12) Grass seed should be planted no deeper than 1/4 - 1/2 inch.
RESPONSE D12. In fine soils this is certainly correct, but
in a coarse medium the proper depth is 1/2" to 1" to take advantage
of moisture and avoid the dry surface layer. A small percentage of
the seed will probably be unintentional in a range of 0" to 3" given

P-E-17*
