As far as we can determine the S.C.S. report <br />is referring to the native soil (the Paunsaugunt Series) and not this <br />medium. Furthermore, the high erodibility of the Paunsaugunt Series <br />is not borne out by observations. In fact it appears to be less <br />erodable than the Kutler-Broadmoor Complex. Experience in the <br />past, even with steep slopes (2:1 and more) at both Pikeview and <br />Queen's Canyon, has shown very little erosion of the material and <br />• slippage is quite rare except on slopes in excess of 45°_ where, on <br /> occasion slippage has occurred when downslope support has been <br />removed. <br />Slumps, mudslides, landslides, and creep are all heavily <br />related to an instability of the material when moisture levels increase <br />beyond the capability of the slope and the substrate to hold them. <br />Solifluction in arctic soils can occur on 15:1 slopes because the soil <br />is saturated with tons of water and the mass is resting on a very <br />smooth, highly lubricated clay surface that is about as slippery <br />as greased glass. <br />The substrate here is a rough surface of rock that is <br />partially fractured.
