The source of seed for the above species is commercial with <br />the exception of basin wildrye which was hand collected near the <br />Ninemdle Gap. The seed was covered by hand raking. <br />Management <br />This area has been fenced so grazing will not be a problem. <br />Supplemental fertilizer (30-10-0) was applied at the rate of 120 <br />Ibs/acre in the spring of 1980. <br />Results <br />The present stand of grass is satisfactory considering the <br />growth medium (Photograph 8). There are a large number of indi- <br />viduals established but their growth is stunted, and cover is only 5 <br />to 10%. Western wheatgrass, slender wheatgrass, Indian ricegrass, <br />big sage, lambs quarter, Russian thistle, and leafy spurge are <br />present. The latter three species are weedy but should not pose <br />problems if additional fertilizer is added to favor the growth of <br />the perennial grasses. <br />Recommendations <br />_ The addition of fertilizer will be necessary for several years <br />~ to compensate for the soil that was used as the plant growth medium. <br />The fertilizer should be in the form of a high nitrogen, low phos- <br />phorous fertilizer applied at a rate of 90-120 lbs/acre. <br />Steep Slope Above Sediment Pands <br />Physical Characteristics <br />This slope is on the east side of the sediment ponds and <br />extends northward along the flat north of the ponds (Photograph 9). <br />Much of this slope was retopsoiled with a large trackhoe in the <br />spring of 1979. As mentioned previously, the topsoil was saturatetl <br />when it was redistributed; thus, the soil structure was poor and the <br />resulting slope was very rough and irregular. This rough texture of <br />the slope is still evident in Photograph 10 which was taken in <br />October of 1980. Portions of this slope are very steep and <br />unstable. <br />Implementation <br />This slope was seeded the last week of April in 1979, but <br />because of the steepness of slope and the rough irregular surface <br />there was no seedbed preparation or raking after seeding. Diamnonium <br />phosphate was broadcast on the surface previous to seeding. The <br />following mix was broadcast onto the slope: <br />
