,,
was high the spring of seeding. Other species which are present an
this site include cheatgrass, mullein, tumblemustard, yarrow, big
sage, Louisiana sage, sweetclover, lambs quarter, leafy spurge,
Canada thistle, and smooth brome. Score of these species are
"weedy," but none of them are present in significant numbers to pose
a problem. Success of the seeding can be attributed to an early
spring seeding with abundant moisture immediately after seeding.
Mulching also enhanced favorable moisture relationships. Presently,
the mulch material is well decomposed and the plastic netting is
almost gone.
Recommendations
Additional fertilization in the form of spring applied nitro-
gen will enhance development of the grass stand. Supplemental
nitrogen is necessary to compensate for the nitrogen tied up in the
breakdown of the mulch material.
SedLnent Pmds
Physical Characteristics
These ponds are located across the highway from the Rienau /f2
mine. The ponds were constructed in the spring of 1979 but they
were not reseeded until October of that year. When these ponds were
constructed they were not retopsoiled; thus, a clayey subsoil is the
plant growth medium. This compacted clayey subsoil was used to
achieve the impermeability necessary for the construction of the
ponds, which will function for the life of the mine.
Implementation
Seedbed preparation consisted of rototilling (Photograph 71.
This also facilitated the incorporation of fertilizer (diammonium
phosphate, 300 lbs/acre!. The seed was hand broadcast with a
cyclone seeder at the following rate:
S ecies Rate in lbs/acre
Slender Wheatgrass 20
Western Wheatgrass 20
Bluebunch Wheatgrass 15
Basin Wildrye 5
Sherman Big Bluegrass 5
Indian Ricegrass 2
Green Needlegrass 2
