/~
6. The seeding should be done from March-April 15. If the
area must be prepared in the summer, fall or winter, then
• the topsoil should be mulched at that time and seeded the
following spring.
7. A minimum of 90 lbs. of available nitrogen and 50 lbs. of
available PZOS per acre should be applied after seeding and
not included with the seeding. A soil analysis should be
made to more exactly determine the fertilizer needs.
S. Immediately following the seeding and fertilizing, the area
should be mulched with one of the following; listed in the
order of desirability:
a. Excelsior mats properly staked down.
b. Long-stemmed native prairie hay (4,000 lbs./Ac.)
tied down with properly anchored jute netting.
c. Long-stemmed native prairie hay (4,000 lbs./Ac.)
and an asphalt emulsion (150 gal./Ac.) hydro-
mulched.
d. Long-stemmed native prairie hay (4,000 lbs./Ac.)
crimped in with a weighted disc.
9. Irrigation, if water is obtainable, of the seeded areas is
desirable for at least the first complete growing season
after planting (April-October) and preferable for two years
. after planting. This eliminates the biggest obstacle to
obtaining a vegetative stand - the lack of moisture.
10. Weeds should be mowed to eliminate competition for the
seeded species. Several mowings will probably beyneeded.
11. Various cottonwoods and willows, Virginia creeper, western
virgin's bower, American plum, golden current and choke-
cherry are several of the woody species found adjacent [o
this site that could if desired be planted along the slopes
of St. Vrain Creek. March would be the best time to plant
these.
Sincerely,
Harvey prock
Area Range Conservationist
cc: R.PI. Alt, AC, Greeley
C.E. Hamon, DC, Longmont
.•
