State Reg.
use on these areas. Kentucky bluegrass (Poa ratensis) is one of the •
more common grosses on the area, along with many sedges, and indicates
historical overgrazing. Production on the sites is below optimum and
also indicates past heavy use.
The Soil Conservation Service investigated Grassy Creek, the larger of
the drainages, affected by the Seneca II mine in April of this year. It
determined that the area was not conducive to intensive agricultural
operations such as irrigation and cash crops. The short growing season,
unpredictability of water supply, and physical make-up of the area were
all identified as problem areas. A copy of this letter is included herein.
Since these areas are small and not practical for farming operations, it is
probable that the use of these areas will continue to be livestock graz-
ing. These areas will not be developed in the future due to physical and
economic limitations and should not be considered for having the po-
tential of an AVF.

7-7-8
Revised 5/27/81
