1
45
will be made to fmd and inventory every artifact. Preliminary information from this inventory will
be used to guide specific placement of data recovery excavations, and may also provide sufficient
' information in certain areas that proposed data recovery excavations may be unnecessary. Collection
will be limited to samples of typical materials, unusual items, items (or samples of classes of items)
' that provide good temporal control, worked glass, chipped stone tools, obsidian artifacts, and non-
historic ceramics.
' Data Recovery Excavations
Additional systematic excavations will be undertaken. The focus of this work will be on
' Structure 1, the adobe residence. The goal of these excavations will be to obtain azchitectural
information regarding the structure's construction, and associated artifacts. Three other featwes, are
associated with Structure 1. These include the possible jacal structure on the northwest side, the
' possible horno on the southwest side, and the subsurface feature found in Test Pit 5 on the southwest
side. Excavations will not cover any of these features in their entirety, but will be placed to provide
a sufficient sampling of the azea to recover information concerning function, construction methods
' and episodes, and temporal and spatial associations between the four features. Up to 15 sq m of
additional excavation will be placed at Structure 1 and its associated features.
' Other excavations, probably consisting of single 1 sq m units, will be placed at other feature
locations in an effort to determine function, age, and intrasite association. These features include
Feature 4 (possible dugout), Feature 5 (possible structure of unknown function), Feature 7 (possible
domestic structure), the bam/pen area, and the dump location on the northwest site periphery.
Excavation will be avoided at any of these locations if it is determined that a systematic surface
' collection of artifacts and building materials might serve to provide the same information. Up to
eight squaze meters of excavation is proposed in these areas.
' Expansion of either Test Pit 3 or Test Pit 7 into a small block excavation is recommended.
Both of these test pits produced artifacts from the historic and lithic components of the site and are
also somewhat spatially segregated from the site's structural remains. The materials found in these
' two test pits may represent the remains of outdoor activity areas and could provide further functional
and chronological information, as well as information about the possible association between the
' historic and lithic component. Up to 10 additional square meters are proposed in this azea.
The total of thirty-three square meters proposed will be treated as a "pool" as excavation
' proceeds. The focus of excavation, and thus the allotted square meters, may shifr as initial
excavation results come in, so that areas with greater potential for significant contributions to the
reseazch design receive the most attention, and areas that tum out to be relatively unproductive do
' not absorb more effort than is warranted.
Artifact and Sample Analysis
1 The artifacts and materials recovered from excavation and from surface collection will be
. analyzed to derive functional, temporal, and ethnic associations. This information will be used to
' address these issues on an intrasite and intersite basis, and to support or refute, and certainly
