1
supplement, the extant historic record. Recovery of samples of materials or sediments fob
' macrobotanical analysis will occur where appropriate contexts exist. Samples for radiocazbon assay
will be collected if such materials or associated features aze indicative of occupation of the site prior
to the Historic period. Obsidian artifacts (or a sample thereof) will be submitted for source azea
' analysis. Faunal materials will be analyzed for element, taxonomy, and cultural modification.
Archival Research and Informant Interviews
' In addition to the archaeological test excavations, additional archival research will be
conducted (i.e. courthouse, newspapers, etc.) and an oral history study will be undertaken to provide
' additional information about the site and the general area. An historical overview will be completed.
Other Considerations
' Native American consultation for the entire Lorencito Canyon Mine project azea is ongoing
' at this time. As of the writing of this report, only the Cheyenne-Arapaho tribal representative has
visited the project area. He was shown this site, among others. His primary concemsa at SLA7186
regazd the discovery and treatment of human remains. The project treatment plan (McKibbin et al.
' 1997:110-130) provides direction in the event of such a discovery. Any discovery of human remains
will be treated according to federal and state law regazding such materials.
Other considerations, such as a discovery plan, cost minimization, public participation,
artifact curation, and scheduling, are covered by McKibbin et al. (1997:123-125).
' e rti
McKibbin et al. (1997:122) proposed to complete an "annual" report of each season's
' investigations at the mine. These reports are proposed fot submission the spring following the field
season. A report of the results of the treatment plan investigations at SLA7186 will be included in
the report of 1997 investigations, unless it will cause undue delay in submission because ofextensive
analysis. If that becomes the case, the annual report will be submitted as scheduled, and a separate
report covering SLA7186 will be submitted when complete. Lorencito Coal Company, the MLRB,
' and SHPO will be consulted if such a scheduling change is necessary. This and all reports will be
prepazed according to the guidelines of the Office of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, Denver.
An OAHP re-evaluation form will be completed for the site and submitted along with the final
' report
1
' ~ Mr. Gordon Yellowman, Sr., Coordinator, Cultural Protection Program, Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes
. of Oklahoman, visited the project area on May 27, 1997. The summary of his comments and concems as they apply
' to this site is based on conversations between [he senior author and Mr. Yellowman at [he time of his visit. MAC is
awaiting a written report from Mr. Yellowman, which is anticipated to reiterate [hose same concerns.
