can be placed at appropriate depths. The seedbed shall be reasonably free
of weeds. Competitive stands of weeds that are present before seeding will
be controlled by shallow til)a ge or by application of herbicides labeled
for this purpose.
Soils ghat have been over-compacted by traffic or equipment, especially
when wf~t, should be tilled to break up rooting restrictive layers, and
then harrowed, rolled or packed to prepare the required firm seedbed.
Seed will be planted with a grass drill on all slopes of 33 percent (3:1)
or flatter. The grass drill will be equipped with double coulter disc
furrow openers, depth bands and press wheels. The distance between drill
rows shall not exceed twelve inches. Seed will be planted uniformly and
at a dE:pth of 1/4 inch to 3/4 inch.
Seed will be broadcast by hand or by mechanical spreader on areas that are
small, too steep, or not accessible for seed-drill operations. Seed
planted. by the broadcast method shall be incorporated into the surface
soil, riot to exceed a depth of 314 inch, by raking, harrowing or other
proven method. Seeding rates will be doubled when seed is broadcast rather
than drilled.

Mulching:
All areas will be mulched unless a cover crop is planted. Planted areas
will be mulched with straw at a rate of 4000 pounds per acre. At least 507.
of the mulch by weight shall be 10 inches or more in length. The straw
will be free of noxious weeds. The straw mulch will be crimped into the soil
with a mulch crimper or with a disc plow. A disc plow can be used by setting
the disc straight and applying adequate weight to crimp the straw 4 inches
into the soil.
Feedlot or barnyard manure may be used in lieu of a straw mulch. The manure
must be of a type that has 607. or more, by weight, heavy chunks 5 inches or
more in diameter. The minimum rate of application will be 20 tons per acre
spread uniformly over the area.
Mulching material shall be applied immediately before or after seeding.
When stabilising sandy soils it will be done just prior to seeding to avoid
seeding to deep.
Cover Crop:
A cover crop may be planted in lieu of mulching the site to protect the
planting from erosion and to enhance growing conditions. Wheat planted in
