The
project area, consisting of low relief mountains, is Bisected by
Stollsteimer Creek, a perennial meandering stream. The stream
has a gradient of 50 feet per mile through the project area with
seasonal flows generally between 0.5 and 5 cfs with peak flows
exceeding 200 cfs.
Two pit areas are of concern for this report. An active pit,
bounded on the west, north, and east by Stollsteimer Creek and
on the' h by Highway 151, encompases the eastern project area
(see Plate 1 Mining in this area will soon be terminated at
which time expansion will proceed to the proposed Barren Ridge
area.
The Barren Ridge area, of approximately 15 acres, is bounded on
the south and east by Stollsteimer Creek. The north is bounded
by a dry channel, and to the west are mountains of increased
elevation. Mining within this pit will not proceed to a depth
greater than the projected elevation of Stollsteimer Creek.
2.4 GEOLOGY
The local stratigraphy is represented by 4 lithologies defined
as recent alluvium, the Kirkland shale, the Fruitland Formation,
and the Pictured Cliffs sandstone.
