• PSSFSSMED7i' OF VISUAL IMPACT - IJJI9G TERM
In the longer term, the influence of the proposed activities on the visual
quality of the area will decrease. The access/haul road will remain in place
to provide public access to the Fast Roatcap Creek area. Continued efforts to
establish tree and shrub material indigenous to the site will reduce the
visual contrasts of the cut and fill slopes by creating a coarser texture and
a mottled color pattern more characteristic of the surrounding vegetation.
Upon the eventual abandonment of the portal site, fill material will be
returned to the original cut area and blended with adjacent topography.
Revegetation with grasses, forbes, shrubs and trees will very nearly reclaim
the site to its present visual, pre-mine condition.
OONCLUSIONS
Colorado Westmorelair7 initially identified three potential sites for the
Orchazd Valley West Mine Portal. The site with the least potential for
adverse visual impacts was eventually selected for the new portal. The
selected portal site is located in an azea seldom seen by the public.
• Access to the site follows the alignment of an existing road thereby avoiding
the introduction of a new intrusion into the landscape. Revegetation of the
proposed cut and fill slopes will, upon establishment, result in visual
impacts that have less contrast with the surrounding landscape than the scars
created by the existing road.
Analysis of the potential visual impacts utilize the Bureau of Land
Management"s Visual Resource Management System. BLM personnel had previously
established the base line data for scenic quality in the azea. The proposed
activities and associated mitigation measures kere found to be conpatable with
BLM Visual Resource Management Objectives for the the area both in the short
and long term.
•
8
