4-61 <br />• <br />4.7.3 Soil Series Descriptions <br />4.7.3.1 Glendive Series <br />The Glendive series consists of deep, medium textured, well- <br />drained soils. These soils formed in stratified alluvium. <br />Elevation range is 5,250 to 5,950 ft. Annual precipitation <br />is about 10 inches. The mean annual soil temperature ranges <br />from 40° to 47°F, and the frost free period is 105 to 135 days. <br />The vegetation is a greasewood-shrubland. <br />The Glendive series is a member of the coarse-loamy, mixed <br />(calcareous), frigid family of Ustic Torrifluvents. A repre- <br />sentative profile of the Glendive loam, sample point i1U13 in <br />map unit HvAB, about 345 feet west of the center of Section 29, <br />T. 7 S., R. 102 W. at an elevation of 5,316 feet is: <br />Ap 0 to 6 inches; pale brown (10 YR 6/3) loam, <br />brown (lOYR 5/3) moist; moderate medium platy <br />structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky <br />and slightly plastic; calcareous; many fine and <br />very fine roots, few coarse and medium roots; <br />some coal particles; PH 7.7; gradual wavy boundary. <br />AC 6 to 13 inches; pale brown (lOYR 6/3) loam, gray- <br />ish brown (lOYR 5/2) moist; moderate thin platy <br />parting to fine granular structure; soft, very <br />friable, slightly sticky and plastic; calcareous; <br />many fine and very fine roots, common medium roots; <br />• pH 7.9; abrupt wavy boundary. <br />
