Temporary reclamation of approximately 8.2 acres of rough graded spoils •
will be carried out in the southern portion of the scraper mining area.
This area will require only temporary reclamation because future ongoing
mining operations will reaffect the area and at this time there is
insufficient spoil available to bring the area up to final graded
contours.
It is requested that the attached revised Seed J~ix Ple. 6 (Temporary
Reclamation) be used for seeding of the temporary reclaimed areas.
The following reasons form the basis for this request. First, the
existing Seed Mix No. 6 contains several species which have not achieved
adequate commercial availability as anticipated (Elymus canadensis and
Elymus triticoides). Second, the seed mix contains a far yreater number
of species than is necessary for achieving effective cover and erosion
control on a temporary basis. Third, seed demand has created availability
problems for a number of the species. This has also resulted in large
increases in the cost of seed. Fourth, the current Seed hlix No. 6
contains several errors, the most prominent being the specified 40.5 PLS
lbs/acre drilled rate which should have actually been labeled as the •
broadcast rate. The revised seed mix has been developed to provide a
balance of quick establishing grasses, sod farming grasses, and grasses
that will establish adequately on poorer quality sites. A legume has also
been included to aid in stand maintenance. Alight cover crop of wheat or
barley at 10-15 PLS lbs/acre will be applied with Seed Mix No. 6 to
provide a complimentary quick establishing cover with the perennial
species.
The temporary diversion ditch will remain in-place for several years,
yradually being removed as the normal mining operations advance to the
Werth. It is requested that Seed Mix No. 6 also be used for stabilization
of tfre temporary diversion ditch. This mix will provide adequate
stabilization benefits while being much more cost effective than the
complicated and costly Seed Mix No. 2. Similar to the temporary
reclamation of graded spoils, a light cover crop of wheat or barley at
10-15 PLS lbs/acre will also be seeded to provide quick initial cover. •
6 02/13/87
