Upland Gravel Pit No. 3
Response to BLM Request for Additional Information
January 20, 2006
1.) Response: The circled 1.4 acre area is intended to illustrate anticipated disturbance
inside and outside of the mineral deposit which will be necessary to construct the haul road
approach and transition into the processing site (crusher and stockpile area). The circled 1.4
acre area is not adequate for a processing site.
2.) Response: The transition area is necessary to accomplish stripping of topsoil,
overburden and removal of base material for the haul road which will create an area for set-up
of screens and crusher. Materials will then be removed and processed after crusher is installed
to ultimately create up to a 4 acre area for processing and stock piling (See attached X-section
- Exhibit A).
3.) Response: See enclosed Haul Road Plans.
4.) Response: Mine plan disturbed materials equals 1,325,000 cu. yds. which consists of 7%
topsoil, 23% overburden, and 65% gravel materials and a reject rate of approximately 5%. At
these percentages, 861,250 cu. yd. will be mined using the ratio of 1.65 ton per cubic yard
equals 1,421,063 ton shall be mined.
5.) Response: Processing of gravel products shall be by screening of pit run to produce
uncrushed landscape materials of 3/4 minus, and 3" to 8" cobbles in quantities of 2,500 ton
each. 2500 ton of 1/4 minus bedding material shall also be stockpiled. Four 5,000 ton
stockpiles of crushed materials shall consist of 3/4 inch road base, 1 1/2 inch road base, 3/4
inch screened rock and 1 1/2 inch screened rock. Reject rate shall be approximately 5%.
Stockpiles shall be renewed as per demand and is expected to require stripping and mining 5-6
days per week and crushing 2-3 days per week, 7 A.M. to 6 P.M.
6.) Response: Each phase consists of two blocks of approximately 2 acres each. Each
block is expected to average one year to mine at the rate of 40K to 60K ton per year. Using 14
feet thickness of gravel and 60K ton or 36,364 cu. yard and allowing 3-1 reclamation slopes
approximately 1.9 acres of surface area is required annually.
Rationale for mining eastern portion first related to several factors. The first being a greater
distance from the existing gun club shooting range which would increase the safety factor and
allow more time for mitigation and containment of projectiles upon gun club property.
Gravel processing impacts would be less noticeable at a greater distance from existing and
proposed residences and 32 Road. Scenic concerns would be avoided for many years.
7.) Response: The limits of mining were determined by BLM personnel to preserve a visual
and safety buffer zone around the perimeter of the grave! deposit.
8.) Response: See Revised Reclamation Plan Tables which include separation of overburden
from "topsoil".
-1-
