Section 816.152 Continued. <br />(a) Vertical alignment. Except where lesser grades are necessary to <br />control site-specific conditions, maximum road grades shall be as fol- <br />lows: <br />(1) The overall grade shall not exceed 1v:lOh (10 percent). <br />(2) The maximum pitch grade shall not exceed 1v:6.5h (15 percent). <br />(3) There shall be not more than 300 feet of pitch grade exceeding 10 <br />percent within any consecutive 1,000 feet of Class I Roads, but in no <br />case shall there be any pitch grade over 15 percent. <br />Class I Road profiles are shown on Map 30, Class I Road Profiles. <br />These profiles demonstrate that the grade and pitch requirements <br />specified above are met for the existing Road A, and the proposed <br />Road B. <br />(b) Horizontal alignment. Class I Roads shall have horizontal align- <br />ment as consistent with the existing topography as possible, and shal-1 <br />provide the alignment required to meet the performance standards of 30 <br />CFR 816.150-816.156. The alignment shall be determined in accordance <br />with the anticipated volume of traffic and weight and speed of vehicles <br />to be used. Horizontal and vertical alignment shall be coordinated to <br />ensure that one will not adversely affect the other and to ensure that <br />the road will not cause environmental damage. <br />Kerr Coal's coal haulage fleet has been described under Section <br />816.150 (d)(2). Although haulage vehicles operate at speeds not <br />exceeding 35 mph, for safety reasons, the horizontal alignment has <br />been determined based on a 40 mph design speed.
