J
EXHIBIT I
Soils Information
Four types of soil lie within the proposed pennit area according to [he Adams County Soil
Survey, conducted by [he United States Department of Agriculture. They are as follows:
AsC (Ascalon sandy loam)
SnB (Santanta loam)
Tc (Terrace escarpements)
VoB (Vona sandy loam)
See attached map.
AsC (Ascalon sandy loam), 3 to 5 percent slopes
This soil is in aeeas adjacent to the major streams of the county, but it is only on the higher
upland ridges and side slopes. These areas are longer from south to north than from east to west
because they follow the drainage pattern. This soil has a profile similar to the one described as
representative for the series, but i[ has a thinner surface layer and subsoil. Surface runoff is
medium, and the hazazd of water erosion is moderate. Soil blowing is severe, especially if fields
are left unprotected.
Most areas of this soil are or have been cultivated, but some areas have a cover of native grass.
Capability unit III-3, irrigated, and IVe-7, non-irrigated; Sandy Plains range site; tree planting
suitability group 2.
Still (Sa[anta loam), 1 to 3 percent slopes
This soil is on stream terraces. The aeeas tend to be long and narrow and aze generally parallel to
present streams and older stream channels. They range from 10 to 50 acres in size. This soil has
a profile similar to that described as representative for the series, but the soil layers are slightly
thinner. Surface runoff is medium, and the hazazd of water erosion is moderate.
Nearly all areas of this soil are cultivated, and many of these are irrigated. In dryfatmland aeeas,
winter wheat, barley, and sorghums are grown. This soil supports native grass, which includes
blue grama and western wheatgrass. Capability unit Ile-l, irrigated, and IIIc-1, nonirrigated;
Loamy Plains range site; tree planting suitability group 1.
Tc (Tetrace Escarpments)
Terrace escarpments occur as breaks or steep side slopes adjacent to the channels of present or
former streams. They also occur as the steep faces of terraces that border bottom lands and flood
plains.
Tnnnbe Pu
DAfG lf1 Permit
Pnge 17 of 46
