Noxious Weed Control Plan
This weed control plan is only concerned with the control of all
varieties of thistle on the mine sites. The spread of thistle in
the regional area, specifically Canada Thistle, is of great
concern.
Weed control will be accomplished by a both cutting thistles and by
spot spraying individual thistles and patches of thistles with and
industrial spot spraying individual thistles and patches of
thistles with and industrial herbicide. Spraying will be done by
use of a backpack spray system. Banvel-720 is a water soluble
industrial herbicide which has been recommended by the Garfield
County Extension Service for use to control all types of thistle.
Banvel-720 will be applied at the rate of three quarts per treated
acre. It will not be applied when spray particles may be carried
by air currents to areas where desirable plants are growing. The
spray will not be applied within the drip line of any trees nor
will it be applied within 10-feet of a stream or irrigation ditch.
Pesticide containers will be triple rinsed and the rinse water will
being sprayed on an established gravel roadways. All specimen
label recommendations will be followed.
Map D-4-22 shows the location where spot spraying is planned and
also shows areas of thistle infestation which cover over 100 square
• feet. Treated areas over 100 square feet in area will be examined
each fall to determine if reseeding is appropriate.
Sealing of Mine Portals and Shafts, Exploration Holes, and Wells
Mine Portals and Shafts
Upon mine abandonment, mine portals will be sealed in accordance
with MSHA regulation 30 CFR 75.1711.2 This regulation calls for a
seal to be constructed "with solid, substantial, incombustible
material, such as concrete blocks, bricks or the or shall be
completely filled with incombustible material for a distance of at
least 25' in such opening".
Two types of seals will be installed according to their location
relative to projected stable water levels subsequent to mine
filling. Seals at a lower elevation than the projected fill level
will be installed according to Figure 4.4.2-1A and seals above the
projected fill level will be sealed according to Figure 4.4.2-1B.
The design of the concrete plug for seals below the projected water
levels was taken from the Bureau of Mines Information Circular, IC
9020, 1985, by Gregory J.
