4 - 38
• Coca 55 to 60+ inches; yellowish brown (10 YR 5/4) very fine sandy clay loam, dark brown
(10 YR 4/3) moist; massive structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and plastic;
calcareous; many lime accumulations occurring as nodules and thin mycelia; some
fine coal fragments; pH 8.5.
The soil has a hue of 10 YR or 2.5 Y, value of 5 or 6 dry, 4 or 5 moist, and a chroma of 2
or 3. The control section is typically stratified loam and fine sandy loam; clay ranges 20 to 30
percent. Some pedons have 1 /2 to 3 inch lenses of coarser or finer material; Gravely substrata
occur below 40 inches in some pedons. Pedons adjacent to streams have up to 10 percent
gravels at or near the surface.
NIHILL SERIES
The Nihill series consists of deep, moderate-textures, well to somewhat excessively drained
soils. These soils formed in colluvium derived from sandstone. Elevation range is 5,350 to
5,600 feet. Annual precipitation is about 10 inches. The mean annual soil temperature ranges
from 47 ° to 57 ° F, and the frost-free period is 105 to 135 days. The vegetation is a
• greasewood-shrubland orjuniper-woodland community.
The Nihill series is a member of the loamy-skeletal, mixed (calcareous), mesic family of
Ustic Torriorthents. A representative profile of Nihill loam, sample point MC3, about 1,335 feet
east and 2,480 feet south of the northwest comer of section 21, T 7 S R 102 W at an elevation
of 5,470 feet is:
All 0 to 7 inches; pale brown (10 YR 6/3) loam, brown (10 YR 5/3) moist; moderate thin
platy structure; soft, friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; calcareous; pH 7.3;
gradual smooth boundary.
A12 7 to 16 inches; pale brown (10 YR 6/3) very fine sandy loam, brown (10 YR 5/3)
moist; moderate thin platy and moderate fine angular blocky structure; slightly hard,
friable, slightly sticky and plastic calcareous; 3 to 5 percent gravels; pH 7.4; clear
smooth boundary.

M~ Volume 1 4-29.96
