4 - 37
The surface horizon is very fine sandy loam or loam. Peaty horizons occur between 3 and
18 inches. Gravely or very gravelly Tenses occur below 40 inches. The control section is mostly
fine sandy loam or loamy sand with 1 J2 to 6 inch lenses of coarser or finer textures, but clay
typically averages 5 to 18 percent. Typically these soils are calcareous throughout, but may be
leached to 6 or 8 inches. Rock fragments range from 0 to 15 percent.
HAVRE SERIES
The Havre series consists of deep, moderately fine textured, well-drained soils. These soils
formed in alluvium derived from sandstone and shale. Elevation range is 5,250 to 5,500 feet.
Annual precipitation is about 10 inches. The mean annual soil temperature ranges from 40 ° to
47 ° F, and the frost•free period is 105 to 135 days. The native vegetation is a greasewood
shrubland community.
The Havre series is a member of the fine•loamy, mixed (calcareous), frigid family of Ustic
Torrifluvents. A representative profile of Havre loam, sample point MC 8, about 250 feet east
and 2,425 feet south of the northwest comer of Section 21, T 7 S. R 102 W. at an elevation of
• 5,445 feet is:
All 0 to 1 1/2 inches; light brownish gray (2.5 YR 6/2) sandy clay, dark brown (10 YR
4/3) moist; weak very thin platy parting to very fine granular structure; hard, very
friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; strongly calcareous; pH 7.7; clear smooth
boundary.
A12 1 1/2 to 8 inches; brown (10 YR 5/3) loam, dark brown (10 YR 4/3) moist; moderate
coarse angular blocky and prismatic structure; slightly hard, very friable, slightly
sticky and slightly plastic; strongly calcareous; pH 8.5; gradual smooth boundary.
C1 8 to 17 inches; brown (10 YR 5/3) silty clay loam, dark brown (10 YR 4/3) moist;
moderate medium subangular blocky structure; slightly hard, firm, sticky and plastic;
strongly calcareous; pH 8.9; diffuse boundary.
C2 17 to 30 inches; brown (10 YR 5/3) sandy clay loam, dark brown (10 YR 4/3) moist;
massive structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; calcareous;
pH 8.9; arbitrary boundary.
C3 30 to 55 inches; brown (10 YR 5/3) sandy clay loam, dark brown (10 YR 4/3) moist;
w massive structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; calcareous;
pH 8.9; gradual smooth boundary.
M~ Volume 1 4-29-96
