4 ~ 36 <br />4.4.3 SOIL SERIES DESCRIPTIONS <br />• GLENDIVE SERIES <br />The Glendive series consists of deep, medium textured, well-drained soils. These soils <br />formed in stratified alluvium. Elevation range is 5,250 to 5,450 feet. Annual precipitation is <br />about 10 inches. The mean annual soil temperature ranges from 40 ° to 47 ° F, and the frost <br />free period is 105 to 135 days. The vegetation is a greasewood • shrubland community. <br />The Glendive series is a member of the coarse-loamy, mixed (calcareous), frigid family of <br />Ustic Torrifluvents. A representative profile of Glendive sandy loam, sample point MC10 about <br />150 feet east and 2,105 feet north of the southwest comer of section 21, T 7 S. R 102 W. at <br />an elevation of 5,402 feet is <br />All 0 to 4 inches; pale brown (10 YR 6/3) sandy loam, brown (10 YR 5/3) moist; weak <br />thin platy parting to fine granular structure; soft, very friable, non sticky and <br />non plastic; calcareous; 1 to 3 percent gravels; many fine and very fine roots; <br />discontinuous peaty layer at 3 to 4 inches; bottom one inch is pink (7.5 YR 7/4); pH <br />7.6; abrupt wavy boundaries. <br />• A12 4 to 8 inches; light yellowish brown (10 YR 6/4) very fine sandy loam, brown (10 YR <br />5/3) moist; strong very thin platy structure; soft very friable, non-sticky and <br />non-plastic, calcareous; many fine and very fine roots, common medium roots; <br />bottom 1/4 inch is a thin platy clayey horizon; coal fragments throughout; pH 7.5; <br />clear wavy boundary. <br />C1 8 to 19 inches; pale brown (10 YR 6/3) very fine sandy loam, brown (10 YR 5/3) <br />moist; moderate thin platy parting to fine single grained structure; slightly hard, very <br />friable, non sticky and non-plastic, calcareous; common fine and very fine roots, few <br />medium and coarse roots; at about 16 inches occurs a thin (1 in.) clayey pinkish gray <br />(10 YR 6/2) layer; pH 7.6; clear wavy boundary. <br />C2 19 to 74 inches; variously colored (7.5 YR 7/4, 10 YR 6/3) stratified very fine sandy <br />loam and gravelly loamy sand, brown (10 YR 5/3) moist; massive structure slightly <br />hard to slightly soft, very friable, non-sticky and non-plastic, calcareous; common fine <br />and very fine roots, non-sticky and non•plastic, calcareous; few fine and very fine <br />• roots; top 3 to 4 inches is a pink (7.5 YR 7/4) loamy medium sand; at 34 inches is a <br />2 inch silty layer; other wavy horizons within; pH 8.0. <br />M~ Valume 1 4.29.96 <br />
