4 - 47
• Rock outcrops include vertical sandstone or shale cliffs, uplifted and tilted massive beds,
and areas with less than three inches of soil over bedrock.
Included in this map unit is about 10 percent of area where more than 3 inches of soil is
overlaying bedrock. The unit is used for wildlife habitat.
MAP UNIT: TRDE - TORRIORTHENTS -ROCK OUTCROP COMPLEX, 15 TO 65 PERCENT SLOPES
This map unit is on moderately sloping to extremely steep mountain slopes and canyon
bluffs. The slope is 15 to 65 percent. The vegetation is mainly ajuniper -woodland community.
Included in this map unit are Torriorthents, rock outcrops, and Haplargids. The map unit
includes about 30 percent loamy -skeletal families of Lithic Ustic Torriorthents and 40 percent
moderately deep, and deep loamy -skeletal, and sandy -skeletal Ustic Torriorthents. Rock
outcrops are vertical sandstone or shale cliffs, uplifted and tilted massive beds, and area with
less than three inches of soil over bedrock and comprise 20 percent of the unit. Included are
about 10 percent moderately deep, and deep loamy and coarse loamy Ustic Haplargids.
• The shallow Torriorthents and the moderately deep, and deep Torriorthents are similar to
the Rentsac series and the Nihill series respectively. The Nihill soil is described in Section 2.3.
The Rentsac soil is a member of the loamy -skeletal, mixed (calcareous), frigid family of the
Lithic Ustic Torriorthents. A representative profile of the Rentsac very gravelly loam, sample MC
11, 1,060 feet east and 2,035 feet north of the southwest comer of Section 21, T 7 S R 102 W
at an elevation of 5,452 feet is:
Al 0 to 3 inches; light yellowish brown (10 YR 6/4) very gravelly loam, yellowish brown
(10 YR 5/4) moist; weak very fine granular breaking to very fine single grained
structure; soft, very friable, slightly sticky and slightly plastic; calcareous; 60 to 70
percent gravels, some boulders and stones on the surface; many fine and medium
roots, few coarse roots; pH 7.5; diffuse boundary.
C1 3 to 8 inches; yellowish brown (10 YR 5/4) moist; very gravelly and cobbly fine sandy
clay loam; moderate fine granular parting to fine single grained structure; very friable,
slightly sticky and plastic; calcareous; 40 to 60 percent gravels, 10 percent cobbles;
• many fine and medium roots, very few coarse roots; pH 7.6; abrupt irregular
boundary.
R 8+ inches; hard sandstone.
M~ Volume 1 429.96
