Numerous coal mines dot the gulch upland areas whex•e several <br />coal seams outcrop. The majox•ity of these mines have been abandoned. <br />All that is left is old portals and tipples with a few still standing <br />• buildings. <br />The nearby Town of Hesperus is hiswrically an old mining <br />tovnx. The Narrow Gauge Railroad at one time made regular runs through <br />Ilesperus, stopping to tape on coal and ore fxvin tlxe nurrprous metal mines <br />teat were begun in the La Plata Mountains to the uorth. <br />'Phe liay Gulclr coal district lies on a diss~;ted plateau cut by <br />moderately steep-sided canyons and valley with a topographic relief of <br />abut 500 feet.
