The site is currently rangeland with greasewood,
rabbitbrush, and pricklypear cactus growing on it. The soil
on the site is a Villa Grave sandy clay loam with 0-1
percent slopes.
We first recommend that the groundwater elevation be
determined as this will effect your excavation depth. The
site should be drilled early in the year when the
groundwater table will be at its highest. Once determined,
then excavation of the site should be within two feet of
groundwater. Second, we recommend you strip off the native
brush on the site and dispose of it. Third, you need to
stockpile, off the excavation site, a minimum of six inches
of clean topsoil. When excavation of the site is completed
the site needs to be reclaimed to 3:1 slopes or flatter.
The topsoil should be spread evenly back over the site and
drilled to grass between November 1 and April 15. The
recommended grass mixture is as follows:
PLS Seeding Rate/ Total PLS ibs/
V_a_rie_t_Y Seecies _____Acre______ SQecies_Needed
Saltalk alkali sacaton 0.9 x 9 acres = 8.1
or Salado
Arriba western wheatgrass 7.2 x 9 acres = 64.8
or Rosana
Common alsike clover 0.8 x 9 acres = 7.2
Grass seed planted with a drill should be covered with soil
to a depth of 1/4 to 3/4 inch. Weed control should be
maintained on the site during grass establishment. Mowing
weeds throughout the growing season would be the recommended
option. At the end of two years the success of the seeding
should be evaluated. If it is determined an inadequate
grass stand is present, the area should be seeded again. If
I cen be of further assistance do not hesitate to contact
me.
Sincerely,
~~~~~
Norma Van Nostrand
Resource Conservationist
Alamosa Field Office
