This
information is requved by Rule 2.04.9 of the
CDMG regulations.
METHODOLOGY
Soils of the project permit area will be
identified through mapping available from
the Natural Resources Conservation Service
(formerly Soil Conservation Service) and site
specific studies. Site specific studies will
include a detailed survey of the proposed
disturbed areas to determine topsoil quantity,
soil quality, and handling procedures for
reclamation planning.
SOIL SURVEY AND MAPPING
Prior to the initiation of field work, aerial
photos of the permit area will be closely
studied. Preliminary mapping boundaries
based on topographic locations, vegetation
types, geologic features, and previous soil
surveys will be delineated on the photos. In
the area of proposed surface disturbance, a
field study will be implemented to refuie
these mapping units.
two acres. Surface observations and
inspection of soil cores obtained from
manually operated soil sampling tubes will be
made to verify changes in soil types along
these lines. Phases of soil series mapped as
co-associations or complexes will be the units
delineated. The series phases will be based
on texture, slope, erodability, coazse
fragment, depth, or other diagnostic
parameter.
A pit will be excavated to 60 inches or
bedrock (whichever comes first) within each
mapping unit to describe a typical profile.
The mapping unit descriptions will be
consistent with the National Cooperative Soil
Survey. Included will be the. thickness and
physical description (structure, color,
texture, etc.) of each horizon.
A narrative description of the soil survey
results will also be prepared that describes
the characteristics of both the soil series and
the soil mapping units. The series description
will include the profile characteristics,
drainage class, physiographic position,
infiltration, permeability, and erosion hazard.
A prime farmland evaluation will also be
included. The mapping unit descriptions will
include their slope, percent soil type
composition, typical vegetation type, and
reclamation potential. The soils map will
exhibit the mapping unit boundazies,
disturbance boundaries, profile/sampling
locations, and a legend.
In these areas, a grid system of traverse
lines will be developed to map the soils to a
minimum mapping unit size delineation of
16
