Statement of Charles Overton public meeting 12 Dec 2006 Northfield Mine Project page 3 Of 10
places, which could be better chazacterized as a rough Jeep trail. In the past
the Town of Williamsburg, which is responsible for the maintenance of this
stretch of the road, has not had the resources to do so properly, let alone bring
it up to the reasonable standazd of a good county gravel road. On several
occasions throughout the year this road becomes impassible except with a
good, sturdy 4-wheel-drive vehicle. Occasionally the culvert crossing at
Chandler Creek partially or completely washes out. The bottom line -this
road can barely withstand the current traffic load let alone any increase
in traffic. A plan needs to be developed and resources allocated to improve
and maintain the road to the reasonable standazd of a good road that is usable
365 days a year.
Apparently on or about November 19, 2006 a private meeting was held
between the mining company and a few private parties in which the mining
company indicated the west end (the worst section of chandler road) was
going to be used by employees going to and from work and "ancillary"
traffic, but the company did not intend to make any improvements to the
road. During the Fremont County Planning Commission meeting held on
December 5, 2006, when prompted by a County Planning Commission
member to "be a good neighbor", the mining company indicated they would
supply gravel to the road a 2 to 3 times per yeaz. I think this should go long
way in making the road more passable and usable to general light traffic most
of the yeaz. My thanks to the mine company for this offer, I greatly appreciate
any improvement that can be done to the road.
Thank your for attention and consideration.
Charles Overton
